My art career started at the Artists Village, in Santa Ana, California. As an art student at Santa Ana College I and ten other students heard about a new and growing art center in Orange County California. The Artists Village was created by the city of Santa Ana to bring a new direction to the deteriorating city core. As with other cities, such as San Diego and New York, city planners realized that artists brought a certain feel to an area that was deemed too run down.
The students from Santa Ana College started a co-op gallery called Legacy Arts. We rented a basement location in the Santora building. There Legacy Arts built a space that showcased the work of members and had special showings of children’s art. Unfortunately, due to the success of the revitalization, rent eventually skyrocketed and beyond the reach of student artists and Legacy Arts closed after 10 years.
After a few years with Legacy Arts I was ready to take the next step and go beyond being a student artist so I opened my own studio in the Santora Building. I have sinced moved to a larger location after outgrowing my 400 sq. ft. space in the Santora.
The Artists Village started with one loction, the Santora Building, back in 1995. Now the Village has grown to include the Cal State Fullerton Art Complex, the Artists Lofts, and the East Village Workshops. There are several restaurants to start your evening in the Village. Often there are street entertainers along the Second Street pedestrian walkway.
The Artists Village (click here) open house happens the first Saturday of each month, which is this Saturday, October 7, from 7pm to 10pm.
